What Is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease, commonly known as gum disease, is a chronic infection that affects the gums and supporting bone around the teeth.

Common signs of periodontal disease include:

Bleeding gums
Red, swollen, or tender gums
Persistent bad breath
Gum recession
Loose teeth
Bone loss around teeth
Changes in bite or tooth position

When left untreated, periodontal disease is one of the leading causes of tooth loss in adults. Early diagnosis and treatment can help preserve your natural teeth and protect your overall oral health.

Periodontal Services We Offer

Scaling and Root Planing

Often referred to as a "deep cleaning," scaling and root planing removes plaque, tartar, and bacteria from below the gumline to help control infection and promote healing.

Periodontal Maintenance

For patients with a history of gum disease, specialized maintenance visits help prevent recurrence and preserve long-term periodontal health.

Gum Grafting

Gum grafting procedures can help restore areas of recession, reduce tooth sensitivity, and improve the appearance and health of the gums.

Crown Lengthening

This procedure may be performed to expose additional tooth structure for restorative treatment or to improve smile aesthetics.

Bone Grafting

Bone grafting procedures help rebuild lost bone caused by periodontal disease, tooth loss, or trauma and may be necessary before implant placement.

Periodontal Pocket Reduction Surgery

When periodontal disease has caused deep pockets to form between the teeth and gums, routine cleanings and non-surgical therapy may not be enough to eliminate harmful bacteria. Periodontal pocket reduction surgery, also known as flap surgery, allows Dr. Gordon to access and thoroughly clean areas beneath the gumline that are difficult to reach with conventional treatment.

During the procedure, the gums are gently repositioned to provide access to infected tissue and bacterial deposits. The area is carefully cleaned, and the gums are then secured to fit more closely around the teeth, reducing pocket depth and creating an environment that is easier to keep healthy.

Benefits of pocket reduction surgery include:

Reducing periodontal pocket depth
Removing bacteria and diseased tissue
Slowing the progression of periodontal disease
Preserving supporting bone and teeth
Improving long-term gum health
Making daily oral hygiene more effective
Reducing the risk of future tooth loss

Dental Implants: The Gold Standard for Tooth Replacement

Missing teeth can affect your ability to eat, speak, and smile with confidence. Dental implants are the most advanced and natural-looking solution available for replacing missing teeth.

A dental implant consists of a titanium post that is placed into the jawbone and functions like an artificial tooth root. Once healed, a custom restoration is attached to create a replacement tooth that looks, feels, and functions like a natural tooth.

Benefits of dental implants include:

Natural appearance
Improved chewing ability
Preservation of jawbone
Long-term durability
Enhanced comfort and stability
Prevention of shifting teeth
Improved confidence when smiling and speaking

Comprehensive Implant Services

Single Tooth Implants

Replace a single missing tooth without affecting neighboring teeth.

Multiple Tooth Replacement

Implants can support bridges or multiple restorations when several teeth are missing.

Implant-Supported Dentures

Implants can provide increased stability and retention for patients who wear dentures.

Bone Grafting for Implants

When bone loss has occurred, grafting procedures may help create the foundation needed for successful implant placement.

Advanced 3D Treatment Planning

Using our in-office Cone Beam CT (CBCT) technology, Dr. Gordon and Dr. Cucchiara can evaluate bone structure and anatomical landmarks with exceptional precision, allowing for safer and more predictable implant treatment.
